cell biology, evolution and DNA studies is biotechnology. To understand the definite changes in
the field of biology, we have to look into the development of biotechnology, which has affected
our health, society and culture because of the multiple discoveries. Biotechnology refers to the

Biotechnology involves the modification of a biological process for purpose or use defined by
human beings. There are three stages of biotechnology: Ancient biotechnology, classical
biotechnology and modern biotechnology.
Ancient Biotechnology: In olden days, human beings hunted their food, and then they
realized the importance of domesticating animals and farming. This stage of
biotechnology developed by the principle of observation, and later they started to store
food, modify food, etc, for example, making of curd, and later the discovery of yeast,
which was used for making bread, alcoholic beverages, etc. Examples of crossbreeding
also existed in that era, for example, a mule, which is an offspring of crossbreeding
between male donkey and a female horse. Mules were and are used for farming, carrying
loads and transportation. Thus in the ancient biotechnology era, the seeds of development
of biology were sown (Verma et al., 2011).
