Drug Treatment for ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has received a lot of media coverage in the past ten years.

One of the things most misunderstood about the disorder is the treatment. Children (and adults) afflicted

with ADHD are often treated with stimulant drugs. Parents are often hesitant about giving their children

these stimulant medications. Treating hyperactivity with a drug that increases activity appears

paradoxical.

Using online library resources, find at least two peer-reviewed journal articles that explain the effect of

stimulant drugs (such as Adderall or Ritalin—amphetamine or methylphenidate) on the brains of those

with ADHD.

Create a brochure that explains the benefits of using stimulant medications and addresses the concerns

of parents of children with ADHD. Be sure to use language appropriate for the audience. Include the

following in your brochure:

o Summarize the findings of the two articles.

o Explain the effect that these drugs have in the brain.

o Explain the concerns of using stimulant drugs to treat ADHD.

Develop a 2 page brochure in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

ADHD: Effect of Stimulant Medications

Attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was referred by

different names in the past 70 years. In the fourth edition of DSM, it was characterized with the

1. Low frustration tolerance

3. Fidgety behavior

4. Attentional problems

5. Low self-esteem

6. Difficulty in sticking to task

7. Inability to adjust in groups

8. Inability to perform activities that need attention (Seitler, 2006).

ADHD is considered to be a neurological problem that causes hyperactive behavior and

the opposite version is also true that hyperactive behavior leads to neurological basis. Still,

surprisingly stimulant drugs that may increase hyperactive behavior are being used to treat

ADHD. Some of the commonly used stimulants are Ritalin or Adderall and methylphenidate

Side Effects of Psychostimulants

Studies conducted have shown that psychostimulants may cause side effects, such as

insomnia, weight loss, loss of appetite, stunted or delayed growth, edginess, headaches and a

higher blood pressure and pulse rate (Seitler, 2006). Walitza, Werner, Romanos, Warnke,

Gerlach, & Stopper (2007) conducted a study on the cytogenic effects of methylphenidate. They

studied the genomic damage in ADHD children, who were being given MPH therapy. The

analysis was done after 1, 3 and six months and the patients were treated and assessed in their

outpatient and inpatient healthcare programs. The measure used by the researchers to find the

extent of genomic damage was presence of chromosomal deviances in the form of micronuclei in

the peripheral lymphocytes. The results obtained in the study showed that there was no

substantial difference in the frequency of micronucleus in the peripheral lymphocytes after the

MPH therapy (Walitza, Werner, Romanos, Warnke, Gerlach, & Stopper, (2007).
