Post a photo which illustrates a major impact of British Colonialism in India and explain the
impact on modern tourism.
The Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata is a beautiful example of British Colonial architecture. It
has been the source of attraction of many tourists. This is just one example, but there are many
beautiful buildings in different parts of the country that are the remnants of the British Colonial
architecture and an attraction for tourists all over India. British colonialism had a major impact
on modern tourism because it was the British who gave tourism a whole new meaning in India.
The hill stations in the country are a great attraction today because of the elegant “Daak
Bungalows” and “Rest houses” constructed during the British era. The beaches are an attraction
for people and most of the beaches were developed as sea-side holiday resorts during the
colonial period. Modern tourism has also been benefitted by the railway system developed
during the British Raj. Indian cities, towns and villages are connected intricately with the help of
the railway system and this is an additional advantage for the modern tourists who want to visit
remote places, which can be on the top of the mountains or deep inside the jungle or just near the
sea-level. British colonialism has proven a blessing in disguise for the development of modern
tourism in India.
After reviewing the materials in the PowerPoint and in the text book, discuss the Maldives’ and
Bhutan’s tourism model from the perspective of the tourist who is looking for a cultural
experience. What aspects of each do you prefer and not prefer from this perspective?
In addition to the text and lecture, you may use experiences from your own travels (not
necessarily to either country) to illustrate your point.
Bhutan and Maldives have some exclusive sites that attract tourists from all over the world.
Gantey, Paro, Trongsa, Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Samdrup Jongkhar, Trashiyangtse, Haa valley
are some of tourist destinations in Bhutan. Maldives , a country made of beautiful islands, has
many traveling destinations, such as the National museum, Islamic center, Grand Friday Mosque,
Maldives Dhoni cruise, whale submarine, Hall Alifu, Hukuru Miskiy mosque and other places.
The names mentioned here demonstrate the cultural aspects of these places. One can enjoy the
tourist destinations, but at the same time learn about the lifestyle and culture of the local
people. If one goes to Bhutan, the way the people dress, the food they eat, the way they offer
prayers would make the tourist think of the cultural aspects related to the place and also about
the origin of the people. Similarly, in Maldives the Islamic centers and the dressing and food
habits will make the tourist ponder about the cultural aspects of the country. It is astonishing that
the Asian countries are connected so closely, but still they have a great variation in their cultural
and religious values.
