Evaluation of a Weight Loss Program

Many Americans believe that they are overweight, by a few pounds to a few hundred pounds.

Because of this, weight loss systems are big business. For this assignment, you are to select a

weight loss system and evaluate it in terms of the information about the physiology of ingestive

behavior covered this module.

 Find a website, a brochure, a popular article, or an advertisement about weight control

that proposes a mechanism for loss of excess weight.

 Document the key proposals in terms of the main claims for success of the program (e.g.,

restriction of fat and small portions).

 Describe the reasons provided for the effectiveness of the program (e.g., a full stomach

reduces hunger).

 Discuss the physiological components involved in the weight loss program. Clearly

express an understanding of the physiology of the process of hunger, satiation, eating,

and drinking as relevant for the weight loss method being described (e.g., long periods

between meals would be likely to reduce blood sugar levels).

 Present a critique of the materials based on the module information on eating and weight

regulation.

 Evaluate the proposal and suggest whether you would try this weight loss system or

recommend it to someone else. Explain why or why not.

For this assignment, you are required to cite, at a minimum the textbook for the course.

Evaluation of a Weight Loss Program

It is true that many Americans believe that they are obese or overweight, by a few pounds

to a few hundred pounds. Because of this, weight loss systems are big business. In an online

advertisement of weight loss and metabolic control being conducted by University of Arkansas

for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the importance of losing weight using a medically supervised

program is emphasized. The University uses a 7 –step plan for weight loss.

Seven Step Plan for Weight Loss

The first step is getting prepared mentally before starting the weight-loss program. The

second step is setting aim of losing not more than 10 percent of one’s body weight in six months.

The third step is including regular exercise in the weight loss plan. The fourth step is not

eliminating fat from diet, but keeping watch on how much a person eats. The fifth step is to

avoid snacking. The sixth step is eating special foods on special occasions and not depriving

oneself from foods one loves. The seventh step is the easiest, weighing oneself regularly to

monitor weight (A 7-Step Plan for Weight Loss, 2014).

The key proposals claimed by the University are that they will help their clients to lose

weight, improve their health, maintain weight loss and enhance chances for longevity. One

cannot lose weight simply by reducing diet or doing a lot of physical activity. One has to put in a

lot of efforts and should also have a dedication and a commitment to lose weight.

The University program stresses again and again that weight loss is not about diet, but it

is about staying healthy, eating healthy, maintaining a healthy weight and enhancing longevity.

The University has proposed a 7-step plan for weight loss. According to the University, “

Successful weight-loss plan is a mind/body undertaking that involves not only monitoring calorie

intake and expenditure, but also dealing with the psychological side of weight loss and habit

change” (A 7-Step Plan for Weight Loss, 2014).

The 7-step plan proposed by the University covers the reasons for the effectiveness of the

program. The University stresses that their program is better than the traditional and trendy diet

programs because it offers the best expertise with the help of the compassionate medical

specialists, who also help to manage the medical conditions that accompany obesity or

overweight, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes and diabetes. The

University also provides comprehensive classes for the participants of the weight loss program

on nutrition, behavior modification and weight maintenance.
