Sigmund Freud, although one of the best-known personality theorists, is probably also one of the

Even if you do not agree with his theories, he is the starting point from which many other
theorists have begun. Specifically, he was concerned with the development of the personality and
how it created the neuroses he saw in many of his patients.

Freud’s theories have contributed in multiple ways to the discipline of psychology. The
most important contribution of Freud to the discipline of psychology is the theory of
unconscious. Freud claimed that people are not aware of what they think and awareness
existed in different layers below the surface in the unconscious layers of mind. Freud was
inspired by Breuer and proposed that neuroses had its origins in the traumatic experiences
of a patient. These experiences are deeply stored in the consciousness and when the
patients tried to recall the traumatic experiences they could confront them and get cured
of their neurotic symptoms (Sigmund Freud Biography, 2014).
The most controversial theory of Freud is the theory of psycho-sexual development. A
few people have criticized his views of infants as sexual beings. Breuer too felt that Freud
emphasized too much on the sexual origins of neuroses in a patient and therefore he
ended his relationship with Freud, but Freud continued with his work and presented the
“Theory of Sexuality”, which was accepted by others to some extent if not completely.
