Assignment 1: Discussion Question: Birth Order

Discussion Question: Birth Order

One of the concepts that students most enjoy about Adler’s theory are his ideas about birth order.

For this discussion, carefully read the text and lecture notes on Adler’s birth order and then respond to

the following questions:

1. Of the five designated birth order positions Adler identifies (oldest, second child, middle child,

youngest and only child), which of these positions do you think has the most challenging developmental

task of growing up to become a healthy, mature adult? Explain your rationale in detail taking an

objective approach that is not based on your own family experience.

2. If you were an Adlerian therapist, which of the five birth order positions do you think would be most

challenging to work with? Support your reasoning with some objective facts about the types of behavior

found in that birth order position.

3. What birth order position best fits your experience in your family of origin? Do you believe his

description gives an accurate picture of you and your siblings? Explain your response in detail.

Discussion Question: Birth Order

One of the concepts that students most enjoy about Adler’s theory are his ideas about birth order.

For this discussion, carefully read the text and lecture notes on Adler’s birth order and then

respond to the following questions:

1. Of the five designated birth order positions Adler identifies (oldest, second child, middle

child, youngest and only child), which of these positions do you think has the most challenging

developmental task of growing up to become a healthy, mature adult? Explain your rationale in

detail taking an objective approach that is not based on your own family experience.

According to the Module 2 Lecture, the first-born children can be articulate and authoritative ,

the second-born or the middle born are competitive and also face difficulty in feeling that they

belong and the last-born are the babies of the house who are overprotected and over-pampered (

Reading Material- Module 2 Lecture).

2. If you were an Adlerian therapist, which of the five birth order positions do you think

would be most challenging to work with? Support your reasoning with some objective facts

about the types of behavior found in that birth order position.

If I were an Adlerian therapist, I would find it most challenging to work with the middle child.

According to Adler, the middle child is never in the spotlight and they can have diverse range of

personalities. They may go to any extent to get attention from their parents and have the sense of

not belonging. They may feel ignored and insecure, which may affect their relationships (Alfred

Adler Research on Birth Order (1870-1937), n.d.).

3. What birth order position best fits your experience in your family of origin? Do you

believe his description gives an accurate picture of you and your siblings? Explain your response

in detail.

I am a first born child and I am slightly authoritative and also take care of my siblings.

According to Frank J. Sulloway, “…the eldest children identify with parents and authority, and

support the status quo, whereas younger children rebel against it” (Sulloway, 1996).
