Assignment 2: Discussion—Evaluating Twelve-Step Programs

 What are the advantages and disadvantages of twelve-step programs?

The twelve-step programs stemmed from Alcoholic Anonymous that began in the 1930s.

The twelve-step groups are widespread all over the country and the world (Module

Readings). They are helpful for people with addiction problems, but they have certain

advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of the twelve-step programs are that they

are an effective alternative, the programs are organized and well-structured and a

systematic approach is adopted by the groups, the programs have a fixed time frame,

they are focused on achieving solutions, there is a unity among the group members and

there is always team support available. Another advantage is of the recovery tools that

are provided by the twelve-step program. The disadvantages of the twelve-step program

are that there is unorthodox sponsorship and the client has to follow the fixed rules and

the setting in the program is like a classroom setting (3- Pros and cons of 12 step groups,

2015).
