Discussion: Does It Matter?

This week, you learned about various theories surrounding the determination of one’s sexual

orientation. In addition, you learned about some of the limitations and criticisms of the research.

 Explain briefly (in 1-2 paragraphs) your understanding of the research on origins of

sexual orientation.

The term sexual orientation itself seems confusing at times. The research on origins of

sexual orientation shows that the terms homosexuals and heterosexuals were coined in

the 18th Century. Sexuality was categorized and people believed that most of the sexual

tendencies were based on biology. People who showed signs of anything other than

heterosexuality were termed as abnormal, and they were told that they have pathology

problem.

The psychosocial and biological theories propose the reasons behind sexual orientation,

but still there is no theory that explains or concludes the precise reasons why people

prefer different kind of sexual orientation.
