Happiness is an achievable state. The positive psychology model has determined that certain
experiences assist in creating a lasting experience of happiness and well-being. According to this model,
our ability to feel happiness is a direct function of our early experiences in relationships. Happiness is
also created through a series of experiences that include acts of altruism and flow experiences.

The Happiness Formula
Reactive attachment disorder or RAD is an illness that can affect young children. It can
be defined as a complex psychiatric illness characterized by serious problems in emotional
attachments to others and this illness usually begins by age 5 (Reactive Attachment Disorder,
2011). Early relationships may be a cause of reactive attachment disorder. In a study conducted
on maltreated toddlers in a foster home, it was found that RAD was prevalent in maltreated
toddlers and this could be due to the ill-treatment in their early relationships by their parents or
their caretakers (Zeanah, Scheeringa, Boris, Heller, Smyke, & Trapani, 2004). A person
suffering fro RAD may not be able to form emotional relationships and as defined in the video,
“...our greatest source of happiness lies in the people around us, exploring how our relationships
go right, how they go wrong, and what we can all do to make them better” (Emotional Life -
Family, Friends and Lovers, 2010). If the personal is not able to form relationships, he or she
may not be able to form strong bond and he or she may not be able to understand the good and
bad things about a relationship. Flow can be defined as the enjoyable experience in the present
moment (Module 2 Reading Material).
