psychotherapy. You will also become aware of the major assumptions and pillars of positive psychology.

Historically, psychology has focused on finding out what is wrong with people. Pathogenic psychology

assumes the worst about people by focusing on their weaknesses. The focus of positive psychology is

different from this.

Positive psychology is different from pathogenic psychology because positive

psychology focuses on elements that can help an individual to live a happy live, and leads to a

thriving society whereas pathogenic psychology concentrates on diagnosing and curing mental

illness (Module Reading for M2).Positive psychology aims to make the lives of people better and

Martin Seligman, the pioneer of positive psychology, states that there are three

dimensions that can be cultivated to gain happiness. The three dimensions are: the pleasant life,

the good life and the meaningful life (The Pursuit of Happiness, 2015). People can practice the
