FECAL Transplantation for C-Diff

You must write a clear, concise and yet complete one (1) page summary drawn from the Indianapolis Star story about the use of "fecal transplants" for severe and non-responsive cases of C-Diff.  Model your summary after a typical ABSTRACT at the beginning of most (if not all) scientific papers.

Your ABSTRACT must be submitted as a Word.doc ATTACHMENT to the ACE Assignment!

Start by going to the following site to read (and there are some video clips as well) the article in the Wednesday, April 8, 2015 issue of the Star.

Copy and Paste this URL into your browser. It will open but with a need to "log in".....so I've purchased (with some help from Bill Gates) a log in for everyone.  Click "log-in" at the bottom of the irritating panel that drops down to the left and enter this ID and password.

ID is my Uindy email: nkraus@uindy.edu

Password is: physiology104  (they'll never hack us I'm sure!)

I expect your summary paper will include research from at least two (2) additional SCIENTIFIC sources besides the Indy Star site (which is NOT a scientific source).  You MUST list those sources at the end of your summary.  If you don't know from previous English courses how to list a reference, GOOGLE it!  These references will only be ONE (1) line for each reference and will be at the bottom of your single page abstract summary. (Feel free to ask Chris for help.)

Your summary paper will be done in Times New Roman, size 12 font.  Single space with one (1) inch margins.  REMEMBER........WHITE SPACE IS GOOD (just not TOO MUCH white space)!

Why does this type of "extreme" treatment provide an alternative to more traditional antibiotic therapy?  The article needs to include a concise description of C-Diff (what is it anyway) as well as the concept of the treatment.  Finally, you will need to close your summary paper by stating your own conclusions about this intervention.  Would you accept this treatment if you or a loved one had C-Diff?

This is an assignment to help you gain insight into alternative medical treatments.  Does this research demonstrate the scientific method?  What's the hypothesis?  The assignment also presents a real challenge which will require you to struggle with writing concisely yet completely!

Fecal Treatment for C-Diff Infections

In a recent story presented on Indianapolis star, “Feces turns out to offer a miracle cure” it was highlighted how fecal matter can be used in the treatment of C-Diff infections. The study is one of its kinds because it involved the direct involvement of the patient, and once the patient had undergone the experimental treatment and experienced the positive results she influenced the FDA to accept the treatment and allow patients and doctors to use the treatment to live a normal and healthy life.

Clostridium difficile or C. difficile or C. diff is a microorganism present in the human digestive tract and if any kind of imbalance of the intestinal microflora occurs then the bacteria overgrows and releases toxins that may attack the intestinal lining and cause a condition called Clostridium difficilecolitis. In the US C-diff has been found to be one of the most important causative agents of infectious diarrhea. The symptoms of C-diff infection can range from mild to life threatening. It may start with water diarrhea that can be around 15 times a day to loss of appetite, pus or blood in stool, abdominal cramps and weight loss. C-diff can also lead to a hole in the intestines that can prove fatal (C. diff).
