Potency and Efficacy of Medications

What are potency and efficacy, and how are they different?

It is important to understand the dose of a drug, the potency and efficacy of a drug because based

on these factors one can decide the effects of a drug. The terms potency and efficacy are different

from each other. Potency means the amount of drug necessary to achieve the desired effect and

efficacy means the effectiveness of a drug or to what extent the drug can produce a necessary or

given effect ( Module).

Efficacy is different from potency because efficacy is the maximum effect that can be produced

by a drug irrespective of the dose while potency is the amount of a drug that is necessary to

produce a given effect. Potency of a drug can be determined by the affinity of the drug for

receptor and the number of receptors available (Efficacy vs.Potency, 2014).
