Discussion—Course Reflection

Society will probably never be without crime. Crime affects everyone, either directly or indirectly. As

professionals, you need to be aware of your own prejudices, biases, and personal values. Perhaps there

were times throughout the course when you were struck by a particular crime report. Perhaps

information you learned in the course changed the way you view offenders or victims. At the end of the

course, you have an opportunity to reflect on what you have learned and how this new information will

shape you, professionally and personally.

Reflect on all your readings and assignments in this course and address the following:

How will you apply the principles you have learned in this course in your professional career? Give

specific examples.

Which assignments caused you to confront your own personal values and biases? What did you learn

from the experience?

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs (one page). Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Course Reflection

The principles I have learned in this course will prove helpful in my professional career. The

different sociological, psychological and biological theories can help to understand the problems

of the clients and the reasons behind the problems. These theories can also help to utilize the best

therapeutic measures to treat the clients. The theory of biological causes is intriguing and I think

further research in this field will help to go to the root causes of disturbed or abnormal behaviors.

The role of genetics is important, but how far does the environment affects and the studies

related to this correlation will further enlighten and help in my professional career.

The assignment on Victimless Crimes caused me to confront my personal values and biases.

Before this assignment, I never considered drug addicts or prostitutes as victims or criminals. I

did not have any clear idea about Victimless Crimes, but after studying the details and working

on the assignment I realized that the term itself is not suitable because even in a victimless crime

there is an obvious victim and drug addicts or prostitutes are also victims. My views regarding

this issue have changed a lot.
