Essay Writing Services - Fossil Fuels versus Renewable Energy
In physics, energy is defined as the ability to do work. When most people think of energy, they
think of electricity. The energy that is used to produce electricity is derived from a number of
resources. Much of the energy used today is obtained from fossil fuels. However, these resources
are limited. As a result, alternative and renewable resources are being explored for production of
Using online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:
Discuss the scientific and technical concepts related to the uses of fossil fuels and
renewable energy resources.
o Consider how fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas are utilized for
production of electricity.
o Consider how alternative and renewable resources such as wind turbines,
hydroelectric power, wave power, and geothermal energy are utilized to either
produce electrical energy or provide an alternative to electricity consumption.
Explain the advantages and disadvantages related to both fossil fuels and renewable
energy resources such as wind power, hydroelectricity, geothermal energy, and biomass.
o Consider issues such as availability of the resource, sustainability of the
technology, and environmental impact.

Fossil Fuels versus Renewable Energy
Fossil fuels are those energy sources that have been formed in the crust of the Earth from dead
and decayed organic material. The most common fossil fuels being utilized today are coal,
petroleum and natural gas (What Are Fossil Fuels?, 2009).Coal is used to generate electrical
power by first crushing it to fine dust, when coal burns, water gets heated and turns to steam, this
steam turns turbines, which turn generators and thus electrical power is produced using coal. Oil
and gas can be burnt in a direct manner to produce electricity (Fossil Fuels, 2013).
Alternative energy resources or renewable energy resources are those sources that are obtained
from sun and wind, do not have severe undesired consequences like fossil fuels or nuclear fuels,
can be renewed and are free. The alternative energy sources have lower amount of carbon
emission and the common alternative energy sources are: wind energy, biomass energy, solar
energy, hydroelectric energy, geothermal energy, etc. Solar panels use the direct heat of sun to
work, and the wind generators utilize the wind energy to rotate the turbines. Biogas is being
utilized in many countries to cook food, and in California, Jim Mason, has been utilizing trash to
generate electricity in his All Power Labs (Alternative Energy, 2014).
