FINAL ORGANIZATION PROJECT GUIDELINES

Your final project in this course will be a detailed case study of an organization of your choosing. This case

study project will consist of a written paper. You will need to do significant research on your organization in

order to present a fully developed project. You will not be able to cite Wikipedia, but you can certainly find

great resources by reading wiki articles and reviewing the reference lists from which the information is taken.

The following guidelines should be followed when producing the final project.

Length and Style Guidelines:

You will need to prepare a paper of between five and seven pages exclusive of the title page and works cited

page. Your paper should be in 12 point font, Times New Roman, SINGLE spaced, and should have one inch

margins and page numbers on each page. Papers should have in-text citations using APA format, but the

paper itself does not need to follow APA format in its entirety. Specifically, you do not need to do a running

header or an APA title page. In fact, I do not WANT a running header, especially on the cover page.

Your paper should be written in formal, 3 rd person style and should have section headings as appropriate. You

will need to include at least four sources, all of which may be secondary sources. Your sources may not

include Wikipedia and all sources should be of legitimate scholarly reliability. In other words, do not use

sources such as ask.com or wikianswers where unknown individuals contribute their thoughts about issues. If

you have questions about the appropriateness of a source, please feel free to ask me. You may use the

website of your organization as one of your sources provided that the information gained from such website

should be relevant to the topics you are covering. You may also use primary sources if you have access to an

appropriate and reliable primary source.

Excellent papers will include reflections on the material that has been learned throughout this course. Your

papers should provide evidence that you have completed the readings and have given thoughtful analysis to

the company you choose. This is not to say that you need to cite directly from any text that we have read, but

rather that your writing should indicate an understanding of concepts we have studied.

Papers should contain a works cited page, which should be on a separate page at the end. Papers need not

be bound in any formal manner but should have a cover page and must be stapled in the upper right hand

corner.

PAPERS ARE DUE AT 8AM ON THE MORNING THAT IS SCHEDULED FOR

OUR FINAL EXAM DATE. PAPERS RECEIVED AFTER THAT TIME WILL

AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE A 25 POINT PER DAY DEDUCTION. YOU MUST

SUBMIT THE PAPER TO TURNITIN.COM PRIOR TO CLASS THAT DAY, AS

WELL AS BRING A HARD COPY WITH YOU TO CLASS. NO EXCEPTIONS

WILL BE MADE TO THESE REQUIREMENTS.

Elements to be Included in Final Paper:

Each paper should include the following:

 A brief history of your organization: Include facts such as relevant dates and individuals, sales

figures or company valuations. Discuss the founders, their motivations, and their personal successes

and/or failures. Use care to make this part impactful and interesting, but not too long as it would be

easy to take up the entire allotted time for just this portion, and this is really just the introductory

material.

 An explanation of company culture in the organization: Present information on elements of the

company culture such as values, artifacts, and closely held assumptions of the organization. Also

include information on how you believe the company imparts the desired culture to its employees. Be

sure to express whether and to what extent culture is an important component of the success of your

organization.

 Development, evolution and critical incident analysis: Explain the development of your

organization including how it has evolved over time, how it has responded to critical incidents, and/or

what it has done to remain afloat through changing markets and economies throughout its history. This

section (or sections as you may choose to break this into multiple sections) will contain the most

important content of the presentation. This section should also include any incidents of failure or

setback the company has endured and its response to such setbacks. Has the organization been able

to use failure as a catalyst toward eventual success? If so, explain that. The best papers will have an

analysis that includes failures as well as success.

 Future outlook: Conclude your presentation by exploring the future outlook of your company. This

may include anticipated challenges and opportunities and the way your company is utilizing new

technologies or innovations.

OPTIONAL: Your papers may also include a look at your organization through the various frames that we

studied in class. You may find that it is easier to find information on some frames than others, and that’s okay.

They do not have to be equally represented. And, you may find that you have the requisite amount of material

for your paper even without this four-frame analysis. If that’s the case, then such an analysis is not required.

This is an optional section of the paper that may be used to round out your analysis should you wish to look at

the organization through the various lenses.
