  1. First Main Point: Description of Context
    1. Description of Speaker
      1. The speaker is Leonardo DiCaprio
      2. He was important in this moment because he was accepting his very first academy award.
    2. Description of the Situation
      1. The speech occurred in Los Angeles California on February 28, 2016
      2. The events that preceded this speech was DiCaprio going from accepting his award and then moving on to insert the important topic of climate change in his acceptance speech.
    3. Audience Analysis
      1. The audience for this speech was the actors, actresses, etc., at the awards show. The intended audience was everybody in the world including politicians, to get the point across that climate change is real and happening now.
      2. The characteristics that are important about the audience is that they are mostly well-known celebrities and the speaker adapted his message to that audience as well as the rest of the country by simply stating that there is a problem and he strongly believes it needs to be fixed.
    4. Second Main Point: Description of Speech
      1. Brief Summary of Speech
        1. Leonardo DiCaprio used chronological organization by first accepting his award, that he was there for, and then going on to talk about something else that held more importance. Saving the best for last.
        2. Yes, it was effective because it really held the attention of the audience because they were not expecting it and it really got people talking about climate change.
      2. Description of Speaker Style
        1. The key stylistic devices used in this speech were taking the platform that he had and using to benefit the country and not just himself. He just used plain, elegant language that everybody would understand.
        2. These devices were chosen because Leonardo DiCaprio was trying to reach everybody and wanted to hold the attention of everybody by the choice of his words. If these words were left out of the speech, the award acceptance would not be as memorable.
      3. Description of the Delivery
        1. Something that is unique about the speaker’s delivery is that he was up accepting an award and went on a rant about something of more importance.
        2. The element of word emphasis and clarity helps make the speech effective. Also having celebrity status makes the speech effective as well.
  • Third Main Point: Evaluation of Persuasiveness
    1. Ethos
      1. The speaker attempted to establish credibility by saying that he had been working on the climate change message for a while now.
      2. Yes, these attempts were successful because people listened and took him seriously.
    2. Logos
      1. The speaker did not engage in any logical fallacies. I do not think that he used any logical structures in the delivery of the speech.
      2. I think they were successful because he made the words into simple terms for those who might not know a lot about climate change.
    3. Pathos
      1. DiCaprio appealed to the audiences’ emotions by captivating their attention and then making them realize that climate change is something that is here and present. He also said how it can affect the future.
      2. Yes, these appeals were ethical and effective because he stated the facts that are happening and was educated about the topic before he went up and spoke about it.
