b. Describe a specific example from nature that caused people to hold on to the belief expressed

in Letter A.

c. Explain how this experiment was able to discredit the belief expressed in Letter A

d. State the foundational scientific theory that developed as a result of this experiment AND the

specific part of the theory to which this experiment relates.

e. This experiment is a masterpiece of scientific investigation. It was one of the first recorded

instances that a question was answered so conclusively that the results could not be refuted.

Based on what you have learned in this class and in lab, pinpoint two specific reasons why the

results could not be debated?

f. Cite any and all references/sources used to answer these questions…and do so correctly!

Redi’s Experiment

a. Identify the prevalent belief of the people at the time this experiment was conducted.

The prevalent belief of the people at the time this experiment was conducted was that maggots arise

spontaneously from decaying meat and that life generated spontaneously from inorganic or nonliving materials

(Windelspecht, 2003).

b. Describe a specific example from nature that caused people to hold on to the belief expressed in Letter

A.

The people believed in the concept of spontaneous generation that living beings are derived from inorganic or

nonliving materials, for example flies arise from bovine manure, mice arise from corn and fish arise from mud

(Origin of Life, 2015).

c. Explain how this experiment was able to discredit the belief expressed in Letter A

The above experiment was conducted by Italian scientist Francesco Redi who believed that flies that visited the

decaying material caused the formation of the maggots. His experiment was able to discredit the belief of

spontaneous generation as Redi proved that maggots were not developing from the decaying meat.
