1. What is the purpose of DNA replication? Compare and contrast lagging strand and leading
strand synthesis of DNA replication?
The purpose of DNA replication seems to be simple according to the term- replicate or copy
DNA. This replication process is essential because it helps in the duplication of genetic
information and helps all the cells in the body to have a correct copy of the genome. The
replication of DNA is a discontinuous process because DNA polymerase, the polymerizing
enzyme can add nucleotides only in the 5’-3’ direction. The problem is solved by the short
segments of DNA called the Okazaki fragments, which are formed by the lagging strand of the
DNA. The leading strand of the DNA is the replicated strand that grows continuously.
