1 . I think it is very important for the young generation to discuss and analyze these factors that are known to be part of the career development process. Thousands of students, including me have had second thoughts about what our careers should multiple times during our childhood and during high school and college. The process of how we might choose a certain career was discussed in Introduction to Career Planning more specifically in chapter one. I think the overall concept can be a bit overwhelming but there were a few things he pointed out that make sense today. He had brought up the fact that jobs created during the Industrial Revolution had attracted workers from farms and rural areas eager to “accumulate wealth and enjoy a higher standard of living,” (Pg. 1-2, Paragraph 4) I think this has become a universal thought when it comes to choosing a career, especially after the economic recession a few years ago. We have opted out from perusing what interests us and opted in to jobs that make more money.
But this is not to say that this is the case for everyone. After the completion of two years of community college I had changed my field of study to Tourism, but why? One of the concepts mentioned in the reading was characteristics of career problems. (Pg. 10, Paragraph 3) The career problem involves multiple options, and in my case the multiple options were the various job choices that were presented to me. By stumbling across a Front Desk Agent position at a Hotel, I realized my passion and future would be in the Hospitality field. In addition, as we gain more knowledge through education we begin to understand the concept of work and what it entails. As a student in college we are thought that there is various types of work which do not include being paid. Contrary to the early perception we had growing up that work was primarily to make money and had to be paid, today as a student I seek opportunities that do not pay but rather teach me skills and experience that I will use in my everyday life. Homework and learning work are two primary ways I as a student am continually learning to help me make decisions. These are just three of the 5 types of work referenced by Cawsey, Deszca, and Mazerolle, among free work, and gift work. (Pg. 5, Work Section)
2.My decision to pursue a degree in tourism development and management was influenced by several key factors mentioned on page 7 table 1.1 including the general state of the economy, friends, special acquired skills, cognitive abilities, temperament and personality, and interests and values. I have changed my major several times over the past few years. I original began school wanting to be an elementary school teacher but decided I wanted a better income so I switched to nursing. Nursing was desirable to me because nurses will always be needed. I soon realized that I am not a math or science person. After reconnecting with some friends in Florida, I found out that most of them were hospitality majors and absolutely loved their jobs in the hotel industry. I have been working as a server for years and keeping customers happy is like second nature to me at this point. I am a very calm, level-headed person even when dealing with an irate customer and I can usually resolve their unhappiness very easily. This finding is a component of cognitive information processing mentioned on page 9. With the economy improving, I figured the TDM degree at ASU would be perfect for me. I am originally from Florida which has a booming tourism economy and so does Arizona so no matter where I chose to live I am confident I will be able to find a job that I will truly love.
1. I completely agree with you that the younger generation should discuss and analyze the factors related to the career development process. We plan something about our career in our childhood, but as we grow up we change our career plans according to the situation and also according to our skills and abilities.
2. I believe the factors that affected your choice of tourism development and management have also influenced me. I feel I have the skills and abilities to work in this field and also my friends have advised me to join this field.
