Political culture is a framework of attitudes, values and beliefs that give order to a political system, that define relationship between citizens and the government and among citizens themselves. The basic ideals of American culture are liberty, equality, democracy, and individualism. Even though the Americans may have many disagreements where the expectations from politicians is concerned there seems to be a mutual agreement. They expect a lot from the people they elect. Though they may not expect the leaders to solve all the problems they expect transparency from the leaders. Most Americans want the leaders to decrease economic equality, the policies of the government are believed to benefit the wealthy. Most of the Americans do not believe in spending too much on wars they would support cuts on defense expenditure (The Social Studies Help Center, N.D.). Marriage is broadly defined as a union between a man and a woman. Most of the states are yet to legalize same sex marriages, some of the federal benefits are not available for gay couples although there is an awareness created about the need for it. The Americans today want equality to be applied to all its citizens withoutany distinction. Abortion as a civil liberty is still a contentious issue, there are still differences of opinion where abortion is considered, there is no uniformity between the states regarding this law, women’s groups have stressed on the constitutional right to an abortion. Anti abortion activists some of them may be associated with religious groups believe that human fetus is a living person and has the right to live and abortion should only be carried out in exceptional cases like risk to mother.
