Discussion—Nature Versus Nurture

The term gender has been used in the field of social science to define the line between

biological and social differences. Popular culture has transcribed these differences into the

nature-versus-nurture debate. In popular culture, the use of these descriptors indicates a

complete understanding of the breadth of both socially and biologically determined differences

regarding the psychology of gender.

In this assignment, you will imagine you are part of a debate in a communications course. The

debate is on the subject of nature versus nurture.

The facilitator will assign you to a debate team either in favor of nature or nurture.

Using the module readings, online library resources, and the Internet, research the subject of

nature versus nurture. Select at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed resource for use in this

assignment.

Combine your experiences with the research and respond to the following:

Provide a focused introduction that integrates the description of your assigned perspective

along with a well-crafted argument.

Provide your closing arguments about why your perspective is more important in determining

the psychology of gender and its impact on psychosocial development.

Include one personal example and one extraneous example from your research to support your

assertions. The extraneous research example can be from the module readings or from

independent research.

Write your initial response in 300–400 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Discussion—Nature Versus Nurture

Provide a focused introduction that integrates the description of your assigned perspective

along with a well-crafted argument.

Nature vs. nurture debate has existed from many years, and still the researchers have not

been able to find some reliable answers to support their claims and therefore the debate

continues. After going through the modules, the reading material and a few articles on the nature

vs. nurture debate, I was confused initially and felt like both play a role in the determination of

gender. Then gradually my focus changed, and I realized that nature is more important than

nurture in the determination of gender because the basic characteristics necessary for the

development of gender are usually associated naturally with the person. The biological

differences in brain have a strong influence on the biological characteristics of gender (Module

Reading Material (3), 2015). The nurture concept is not firm and reliable as the nature concept.

Nature gives direct and reliable answers related to the determination of gender, but nurture does

not give direct answers and research is essential in this field to understand and prove how nurture

is essential in the determination of gender.

Provide your closing arguments about why your perspective is more important in

determining the psychology of gender and its impact on psychosocial development.

Nature has a strong influence on the psychology of gender and this is quite obvious from

the biological differences of men and women. Mishaal Baksh, in his article, “Nature vs. Nurture

and the Gender Divide”, clearly states the difference between sex and gender. The Med

Lexicon’s dictionary definition also says that sex is the biological character, while gender is the

category assigned by others based on sex. Person’s sex is a biological determinant given by

nature, and it definitely affects the expression of gender and based on the biological determinants

the differences due to nature can be defined easily. Baksh says, “What occurs within the human

brain is inarguably responsible for a host of behavioral patterns some even as a result of

hormonal secretions” (Baksh, n.d.). Thus, this further affirms that nature has a far important role
