How do PET and MRI work?

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are

imaging techniques that give a clear picture of the structure of the living brain and also the

functioning of the brain. In functional MRI technique the image shows the heightened neural

activity of the regions of the brain. Different colors reflect high or low levels of oxygen uptake,

blood flow and similar activities. This heightened activity is due to a simple logic that if a region

becomes active due to mental processing, the regions metabolic rate increases with an increase in

oxygenated blood flow. These techniques are more useful in cognitive science because they

show the brain in action and not just the physical structures. These techniques are functional as

they show the functioning of the brain when it is performing its mental task and they are not
