The following website contains links to research projects on treatment for drug abuse currently being funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Browse the various studies underway and choose a clinical trial that assesses a potential treatment.

 Summarize the study for your classmates.

 Explain whether this treatment would be characterized as a behavioral intervention or a

drug/pharmacological intervention.

Substance Abuse Treatment Research

Summarize the study for your classmates.

A study was conducted by NIDA to test whether pioglitazone can reduce opioid withdrawal

symptoms. The participants were selected between the age group of 18 to 65 years and were

given buprenorphine to treat opioid dependency. The study was conducted over a period of 17

weeks and the participants were asked to visit the clinic every day for 13 weeks. The participants

were screened physically and medically and their medical history was recorded. They were given

buprenorphine for 7 weeks. For the first 3 weeks, the dose was high and in the next 4 weeks the

dose was reduced. Blood, urine and breath samples were collected regularly and the participants

were given questionnaires on mood, drug craving and withdrawal symptoms. Then after 1 week

on buprenorphine, the participants were given the study pill or a placebo every day. This study

pill was given for 13 weeks and the participants attended drug counseling once a week for 30

minutes. Some of the participants were also tested for change sin brain activity by using

functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. The participants were followed up by phone call

three weeks after the last clinic visit (Pioglitazone to Treat Opioid Withdrawal Symptoms, 2014).

Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were used while selecting the participants to avoid any

kind of problems during the study.
