- a) According to ISO 9001:2008, corrective action is the elimination of the cause of nonconformities to prevent their recurrence while preventive action eliminates the cause of potential nonconformities to prevent their occurrence. Therefore, by using preventive action a company can save money and time by not having to do the analysis and repairs that come with corrective actions. Preventive action also avoids any customer returns or complaints.
- b) Corrective action is important because it addresses major issues and concerns that effect company profit and customer satisfaction. Correction ensures that quality issues are resolved and the amount of rework and scrap is reduced. This benefit saves the company both time and money.
- c) One of the techniques for prevention that we use at GE Oil and Gas is regular inspection and testing throughout the assembly process. All welds for the frame are inspected and as components are added they are also inspected and tested. If any issues arise corrections are made or suppliers are contacted in an effort to have the faulty part replaced. The testing and inspections drastically reduce the chances that our customers will have issues with our Blow Out Preventers. However, this does add time to the assembly process which is communicated to the customer and reflected in the on time delivery date.
- d) The FMEA was performed on an electronically controlled ball valve used to control water flow between control skids. There are three failure modes for this valve: fail open, fail close, and leak.
